What affects how drunk you get?

Oh! It’s a horrible experience after getting drunk. Let’s ask your friend who picked you up near the doorstep of the bar. Basically alcohol affects the nervous system. It slows down your body activity and makes you unsteady. Your reactions also slow down, and you may become uncoordinated or unsteady on your feet. Your speech may get slurred and you may start seeing double.

If you've had a lot to drink you may also experience strong emotional responses - for instance you may become aggressive or tearful. And because your judgment is impaired, you may do things that you might not normally do - from dancing on tables to going home with strangers. They may seem a good idea at the time, but can be extremely dangerous.

The amount of liquor consumed and at what rate you drink determines your blood and alcohol concentration. The other factors that affect this concentration level are-

  • Drinking habits – A regular drinker’s body develops a kind of tolerance to alcohol. They are less likely to be affected. Therefore to have the same effect they drink more.
  • Body size - Don’t ever challenge your friend that you can remain steady even if you drink the same amount of liquor as him. It’s a wrong conception. If you are shorter in size, your body volume is also small. As a result you’ll be affected more than him.
  • Body water - If your body’s water concentration level is below normal, you will likely be affected more and vice versa.
  • Gender- Generally we come across women who get high easily. But why? Because women are smaller than men and have less body water.
  • Food consumed - Never whine about eating food before drinking. It is a good way to avoid getting drunk. If you have taken food then the alcohol will be absorption will be slowed down.

We recommend you to drink less but not drive.

In India, if your body holds a blood alcohol concentration above 0.30%, then it is a punishable offence and you can land yourself behind bars & pay a hefty penalty. If translated this means you could have just one drink and drive if you live in India, but best not to take that chance as your blood alcohol concentration depends on your weight, gender, and well, overall on your ability to absorb alcohol.
